Chapter 10

Turin sat on the sofa while Morgan slumbered on the dusty bed. He didn’t need sleep like she did, only a few hours of meditation.

Morgan lay on her side, her arms folded under her head for a pillow. The gun within easy reach for her. The position accented the curve of her hips. Flashes of their night together played out in his mind, distracting him. He focused on the sounds outside the cabin down to the wind in the grass. Anything to not remember he was the reason she was on this planet and hunted.

Turin waited for the moment the sun set. He dreaded waking her, she’d lay awake for hours before settling into a fitful sleep. She’d only settled the last half hour. A tickle in the back of his mind reminded him they didn’t have the luxury of time.

He stood and touched her shoulder. “Morgan.”

She sat up immediately, eyes wide as if she expected an attack. She’d grabbed the weapon, finger on the trigger.

“It’s just me. It’s Turin.” Their eyes met, but it was as if she didn’t see him. “You’re safe.”

She shook her head, then her shoulders shuddered. She dropped her face into her hands with a sigh. She silenced a few sobs, then wiped her eyes. “Sorry. Bad dreams.”

“We need to go. The sun has set. I packed up the supplies while you slept.” He waved toward the kitchen as if to show how thorough he’d been. He saw how she shrunk from his touch. If she wouldn’t suffer his touch, he could at least care for her by anticipating her needs. “The next stop won’t have food.”

She swung her legs over the side of the bed. “Where are we going? What’s the plan?”

“Well, it’s simple really. Get off the planet without getting caught.” His phone vibrated, the fifth time since the sun had set. He dismissed all the messages, all Reese demanding to know where he’d gone.

“How?”

“Steal a transport.” Assuming his program worked right when they got to the launch pad. He’d planned several ways off the planet. One was bound to work.

“Okay.”

They stared at one another for a long moment.

“I gotta say, you’re taking this all well.” He opened the door and stepped into the night. “Or you’re planning my death.”

She showed no reaction to his poorly made joke.

“Morgan, I’m truly here to help. I know this is a lot to process. It took me at least a year to acclimate being a vampire, and I didn’t know they existed until the day I was turned.”

“I just need some time.” She followed with a mirthless grin.

“Ask me anything you want to know.” He didn’t want to overwhelm her with details. In order to earn her trust, he’d have to be tactfully honest. And they had a long walk to the next stop, plenty of time to explain his world to her and be reminded of what he’d left behind.

“How did you become a vampire?” Morgan matched pace with him.

“I...” He hadn’t thought about his turning in a long time, yet he’d just brought it up.
